The Lab

Role: project management, creative direction, curatorial

The rising popularity of 360° movies inspired us to explore this opportunity with the resources my team and I had. To stay current with the industry requirements, our Immersive Experience Club, XP Lab, took the initiative in providing the latest technology for CalArts students to play with. This led to the creation of The Lab concept.

We decided to establish our own “laboratory” for 360° projection mapping and 360° sound for the upcoming Expo 2024 at the California Institute of the Arts, a yearly industry networking event held at our university. After extensive discussions about grant acquisition, fire safety compliance, spatial requirements, drafting and the choice of materials, we built The Lab from scratch. We welded the metal parts, 3D printed the necessary connectors, and sewed the projection fabric for the 32ft dome.

The Lab hosted more than 60 artists showcasing their theses and other works created throughout their year at CalArts. Curating the Main Gallery, we presented 10 live performances, 28 movies and 14 artwork installations at the Expo 2024 event.
